A tummy tuck can be one of the most exciting and empowering decisions you'll ever make.

But that doesn't mean the decision is easy. There's a lot to consider before choosing which technique you're interested in, which provider you trust, when the timing is convenient, and even if plastic surgery is right for you in the first place.

At the Bengtson Center for Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery, we talk to patients every week who are contemplating this exact question. Whatever brings you here, we want to help you think through this decision clearly, starting with the basics outlined below. For a deeper conversation, request a consultation.

What Does a Tummy Tuck Actually Do?

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) addresses three concerns in the midsection:

Excess Skin

If your abdominal skin has stretched significantly, it may lose the ability to "bounce back". This is especially common if you've been pregnant (particularly after multiple pregnancies) or if you've lost a substantial amount of weight.

Abdominoplasty is the gold standard solution. Your board-certified plastic surgeon — Dr. Brad Bengtson, Dr. David Alfonso or Dr. Narges Horriat — trims away redundant skin and smooths the remaining skin over your abdomen, making your tummy tighter and firmer.

Stubborn Fat

Even if you're a healthy weight, you may carry fat in your lower abdomen. This area is notoriously difficult to shape with diet and exercise.

During a tummy tuck, your surgeon excises excess fat and skin. You may choose to add liposuction to your procedure for additional fat reduction and body contouring.

Separated Abdominal Muscles

During pregnancy, the two vertical bands of muscle that run down your abdomen can pull apart. This separation, called diastasis recti, creates a "pooch" that no amount of exercise can fix.

A tummy tuck allows your surgeon to repair these muscles. Not only does this give your stomach a flatter, fitter appearance, it can also improve your core stability and posture.

What Doesn't a Tummy Tuck Do?

Here at the Bengtson Center, transparency is part of the care we're known for. We will always be honest with you about what a procedure cannot do while we're making treatment recommendations.

One of the most important things to know if you're interested in a tummy tuck is that it is not designed for weight loss. It's not a shortcut around healthy eating and regular exercise (nothing is!). And it won't address fat that's stored deep within your abdomen, around your organs (that's visceral fat, and it responds only to lifestyle changes).

A tummy tuck also won't prevent your body from changing in the future. If you gain a significant amount of weight after surgery, your results will be affected. The same goes for pregnancy — your body can absolutely carry a baby after a tummy tuck, but the stretching may undo the repair work you've invested in.

Signs You Might Be Ready for a Tummy Tuck

These are some of the real-life situations that bring patients to our door:

You've lost a significant amount of weight, and your skin didn't get the memo.

Maybe you've been working with a nutritionist. Maybe you've had success with a GLP-1 medication. Maybe you white-knuckled your way through a complete lifestyle overhaul. Whatever route you took, you look and feel healthier than you have in years.

Congratulations!

But when you look in the mirror, you don't see the transformation you expected. Instead, you see extra skin that makes you feel like you're wearing someone else's body. It can be deflating to have put in so much effort and still be unable to enjoy the results.

A tummy tuck removes the excess skin, the final physical reminder of the body you've worked hard to leave behind. For many weight loss patients, it's the final step in a metamorphosis years in the making.

You've finished having children, and your body never quite recovered.

You love your kids. You wouldn't trade parenthood for anything. But pregnancy did a number on your midsection, and no amount of "bounce back" culture made it actually bounce back.

During pregnancy, your abdominal muscles stretch and often separate down the middle to make room for your growing baby. After delivery, those muscles may come back together on their own. Or they may not. If you can slip your fingers into a gap above or below your belly button when you engage your core, you likely have some degree of diastasis recti.

Add to that the stretched-out skin and stubborn pockets of fat that often accompany motherhood, and you have a recipe for frustration.

A tummy tuck addresses all of these concerns with one technique. It can be done on its own or combined with complementary procedures into a custom Mommy Makeover.

You're dealing with practical problems, not just cosmetic ones.

Aesthetics aren't the only reasons to have a tummy tuck. Hanging abdominal skin can cause discomfort and limitations in your daily life, including chafing, rashes, difficulty with hygiene and infections in the skin folds.

Some patients tell us they've stopped exercising because the excess skin is painful to manage during movement. Others have given up on activities they used to love because they feel too self-conscious.

You deserve an active, fulfilling life. If loose skin is getting in the way of that, addressing it isn't vanity. It's healthcare.

You've maintained a stable weight and are ready to keep it that way.

Timing is an important consideration for abdominoplasty. The best candidates are people who have reached a stable, healthy weight and are committed to maintaining it. "Stable" typically means your weight hasn't fluctuated significantly in the past six months or so.

If you're still actively losing weight, it's better to postpone your surgery. Undergoing a tummy tuck before reaching your goal weight can leave you with more loose skin as you continue to lose, which might then require a revision.

Likewise, if you plan to have more children, it's best to wait on surgery until you've completed your family. Pregnancy after a tummy tuck can restretch your skin and abdominal muscles.

In both these scenarios, patience pays off.

What Disqualifies You From Getting a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck isn't right for everyone, and an honest surgeon will tell you that. Here are some situations where we might recommend choosing a different approach or reconsidering plastic surgery altogether:

You're a current smoker.

Nicotine slows healing and increases your risk of serious complications, including wound separation and tissue death. We require patients to quit smoking at least six weeks before surgery and remain smoke-free during recovery. If you're not ready to quit, you're not ready for a tummy tuck.

You have uncontrolled health conditions.

Certain medical conditions (including diabetes, heart disease and autoimmune disorders) can increase surgical risks and compromise healing. We conduct a thorough health evaluation during your consultation to make sure abdominoplasty is a safe option for you.

Your expectations don't match reality.

A tummy tuck will give you a flatter, firmer abdomen. It will not give you the body of a fitness model or erase every imperfection. It also will not fundamentally change how you feel about yourself if deeper issues are at play. Having clear, realistic goals is a must before moving forward with surgery.

The consultation process is how we figure out together whether this procedure is the right fit for you right now. Sometimes the answer is "yes, let's go!" Sometimes it's "let's revisit this in six months." And sometimes it's "here's a different approach that might serve you better." All of these recommendations are made with your best outcomes in mind.
