What Can Laser and Energy Treatments Do?

The short answer: quite a lot. Modern energy and light-based treatments can address a vast range of skin concerns, often in the same session.

We've invested in a comprehensive suite of Sciton lasers — some of the most advanced and versatile systems available — plus other industry-leading technologies to ensure our patients have access to the very best the aesthetic industry has to offer.

These treatments can help with:

1. Sun damage and age spots

2. Fine lines and wrinkles

3. Uneven skin texture

4. Enlarged pores

5. Dull complexion

6. Redness and rosacea

7. Acne and acne scars

8. Broken capillaries

9. Unwanted hair

10. Mild skin laxity

What Are the Different Types of Laser, Light and Energy Treatments?

  • Concerns: Deep wrinkles, advanced sun damage, acne scars, surgical and injury scars, hyperpigmentation, dull complexion
  • Comfort: Anesthesia options vary based on treatment intensity
  • Downtime: 7–14 days
  • Protocol: Typically 1 treatment
  • Treatments: HALO

If you're dealing with years of accumulated sun damage, deep-set wrinkles or significant scarring, ablative lasers offer the most dramatic single-treatment results we can achieve. These devices work by vaporizing the outer layers of damaged skin, literally removing the old, weathered surface to reveal the healthy tissue beneath.

At the same time, the laser energy triggers your body's natural healing response. The treated area experiences a surge in collagen and elastin production that continues for months after treatment.

This pairing of immediate superficial skin removal and gradual deep regeneration is why ablative lasers produce results that other technologies simply cannot match. The trade-off is downtime. Plan for a week or two of visible healing, depending on the intensity of the treatment.

  • Concerns: Fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin texture, large pores, pigmentation, dull skin
  • Comfort: Topical numbing
  • Downtime: None or up to 5 days
  • Protocol: Typically a series of 2–4 treatments
  • Treatments: MOXI, HALO

If you want improvement without taking a week off from life, nonablative lasers offer a gentler approach to skin rejuvenation. Rather than removing your skin’s damaged outer layers, they deliver energy into the deeper layers to stimulate collagen production. Your skin surface remains intact while the remodeling process unfolds beneath.

A nonablative laser treatment typically allows a quicker return to normal activities than an ablative treatment. It’s often possible to schedule a nonablative procedure during your lunch break and return to work the same day.

The trade-off is that nonablative lasers generally require multiple sessions to achieve optimal results. For many patients, it’s the right balance of effectiveness and convenience. MOXI is our most popular nonablative option.

  • Concerns: Sun damage, texture, pigmentation, fine lines, pore size, early laxity
  • Comfort: Topical numbing
  • Downtime: None or up to 5 days
  • Protocol: Typically a series of 2–4 treatments
  • Treatments: HALO, MOXI

Fractional technology proves you don't have to treat 100% of the skin to get comprehensive results. Instead of treating an entire area, fractional lasers create thousands of microscopic treatment zones while leaving the surrounding tissue untouched. Providers often compare it to aerating a lawn.

After the treatment, the untreated skin between each treated area acts as a reservoir of healthy cells that jump-start the repair process. This allows us to deliver energy deeper into the skin than non-fractional methods would safely permit, while reducing recovery time and minimizing risk.

Fractional technology can be applied to both ablative and nonablative lasers, giving us tremendous flexibility to customize your treatment to your needs. Some fractional lasers, like Sciton’s HALO, combine both ablative and nonablative wavelengths into the same platform.

  • Concerns: Sun damage, age spots, redness, rosacea, broken capillaries, dull complexion, fine lines and wrinkles, unwanted hair
  • Comfort: No numbing required
  • Downtime: None to minimal
  • Protocol: Typically a series of 3–5 treatments
  • Treatments: BBL HERO, BBL HEROic, SkinTyte

BroadBand Light (BBL) is an advanced form of intense pulsed light (IPL) that addresses pigmentation, redness, vascular concerns and skin quality issues. The key difference between BBL and lasers is the wavelength — lasers emit a single wavelength of light, while BBL delivers multiple wavelengths simultaneously.

Sciton’s BBL Hero and BBL HEROic come with interchangeable filters that allow us to customize each treatment. Changing the filters allows us to target different aspects of the skin, including the melanin in brown spots and the hemoglobin in blood vessels.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of BBL is the research supporting its preventive benefits. A landmark study from Stanford University demonstrated that regular BBL treatments can alter gene expression in skin cells, turning off aging genes and activating youthful ones.

  • Concerns: Skin laxity, fine lines and wrinkles, loss of jawline definition, drooping brows, loose skin under the chin
  • Comfort: Topical numbing
  • Downtime: None
  • Protocol: Typically 1 treatment
  • Treatments: Sofwave

If your concerns are less about color and texture and more about your skin starting to lose firmness, consider an ultrasound treatment.

Ultrasound technology sends sound waves into the deeper, foundational tissue layers, including the same deep plane that surgeons address during a facelift. This is a noninvasive way to stimulate collagen production for improved skin elasticity, reduced wrinkles and a lifting effect.

Sofwave is FDA-cleared to lift and tighten skin in the face, neck, eyebrows and submental area (under the chin). It works across all skin types and tones, with minimal downtime and significant improvement in as little as one session.

Why Do Patients Choose Symmetry Med Spa for Laser and Energy Treatments?

Grand Rapids has no shortage of medical spas offering laser and energy treatments. So why come to us? A few things set our practice apart.

First, there's the medical oversight. Our licensed medical estheticians undergo advanced training and work under the direction of board-certified plastic surgeons. This level of supervision isn't as common as it should be in the med spa world.

Then there's the technology. We offer a comprehensive range of laser, light and energy devices because we believe in having the right equipment for every concern. Some practices purchase one device and try to make it work for everyone. We'd rather invest in a suite of tools so we can match you with the treatment that will actually deliver the results you're looking for.

Finally, there's the experience. Our treatments are performed in a warm, spa-like environment designed to feel more like a peaceful retreat than a clinic. You receive a complimentary VISIA Skin Analysis before your treatment, and we include aftercare kits with our advanced laser treatments because optimal results don't end when you leave our office.
