We’ve heard countless patients describe the moment they saw a photo or reflection and wondered when the face looking back stopped matching how they feel inside. The energy is still there. The spark hasn't faded. But the sagging skin and deepening folds tell a different story.

A facelift restores harmony between how you look and how you feel. Using specialized techniques and carefully placed incisions, Grand Rapids plastic surgeons Dr. Bengtson, Dr. Alfonso, and Dr. Narges Horriat perform facelift surgery to address the structural changes that happen as facial tissues descend and skin loses its elasticity. Our surgeons feel passionate about offering the most advanced, proven techniques available so that they can deliver maximum results with minimal recovery and downtime.

At the Bengtson Center for Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery, we know that when your face reflects who you are in positive ways, you not only look younger, you feel younger — attractive and energized. When performing a facelift, our surgeons use expert techniques customized specifically for each patient’s individual needs. Friends and family will notice that you look younger and refreshed, but strangers would never guess that you have had surgery at all.

What is a facelift?

Aging affects our faces in predictable ways. Our features begin to lose definition, our skin and tissues sag, and we lose underlying volume. A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, restores a more youthful, balanced facial appearance to the mid and lower face, including the neck.

A facelift focuses primarily on improving jowling and upper neck skin, but it also improves facial folds and excess sagging facial skin. The procedure can take years off your appearance while maintaining the unique facial features and expressions that make you you.

What a Facelift Can Improve

Depending on your specific concerns, your facelift may address:

  • Jowls: sagging skin that forms along the jawline
  • Marionette lines: vertical lines that extend downward from the mouth corners
  • Mid-face drooping: descent of the cheeks due to loss of skin elasticity
  • Neck skin: loose, hanging skin sometimes called a "turkey neck" (when a neck lift is included)

How a Facelift Is Performed

At the Bengtson Center in West Michigan, our surgeons offer a variety of facelift techniques. The extent of your procedure depends on your anatomy and goals:

  • Full facelift: Addresses the mid-face, lower face and neck comprehensively. Incisions for a full facelift are hidden just below the side burn and begin inside the ear, avoiding the older visible scar in front of the ear. They continue under and behind the earlobe and end just at the hairline.
  • Mini facelift (short scar facelift): Uses smaller incisions to target early jowling and mild sagging, with a shorter recovery period. To improve the mid-face alone, your surgeon may use only one small incision just in front of the ear.
  • Facelift with neck rejuvenation: To improve a double chin or a sagging neck, or to perform liposuction of the neck, your surgeon may add a small incision beneath the chin.
  • Neck lift: Performed alone or combined with facelift to target submental fullness, neck banding, and loose neck skin through incisions under the chin and behind the ears.

Ideal Candidates

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for a Facelift at the Bengtson Center?

Age alone does not define candidates for facial rejuvenation, including facelift. Facial rejuvenation procedures are often chosen to delay or improve visible features of facial aging. A facelift may be right for you if:

  • You notice structural changes that bother you. When you look in the mirror, you see jowls forming along your jawline, deep creases around your nose, mouth, cheeks and chin, or a neck that's lost its definition.
  • Non-surgical treatments aren't giving you the results you want. Dermal fillers and neurotoxins can work well for early signs of aging, but there comes a time when volume replacement and wrinkle relaxers no longer meet your needs.
  • You have realistic expectations. A facelift will make you look like a refreshed version of yourself, not a totally different person and not exactly as you looked 20 years ago. Your bone structure and overall proportions will remain the same. What changes is the position and quality of your soft tissues.

Additionally, to be considered a good candidate for the procedure, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You can clearly define why you want the surgery.
  • You understand what a facelift can and cannot accomplish.
  • You don't smoke, or you're willing to quit.
  • You accept the potential risks of this procedure and your responsibilities as a patient.
  • You are healthy, emotionally secure, and stable.
  • You accept that you will need to make healthy lifestyle choices to maintain the results achieved by a facelift procedure.

What Else Should I Know About Facelift Procedures at the Grand Rapids Bengtson Center

1. Facelifts are performed on an outpatient basis.

2. You will need a capable adult with you for 24 hours after your release from the hospital or recovery center.

3. All surgeries carry the potential for risks, which will be fully discussed with you during your consultation. Our goal is to maximize both your outcome and your overall experience.

4. After your facelift, you will return to your home or, for our out-of-town guests, to one of the designated hotels conveniently located a short distance from our office.

5. Results are long lasting, but maintaining your youth is a lifestyle choice, and proper skincare is essential after surgery.

6. When it comes to facelift surgery Grand Rapids patients are administered local anesthesia with sedation or, rarely, they receive general anesthesia.

7. Recovery is usually about a week and, using new techniques, most patients have minimal to no bruising. You may return to light, normal daily activity the day following your procedure.

8. Scars are a normal outcome of facelift surgery, but they will be concealed within the hairline and natural contours of the face. The location and pattern of your incisions and the resulting scars will be discussed during your consultation.

Ultherapy and BOTOX Cosmetic Non-surgical Facelift Alternatives

Not everyone who notices facial aging needs surgery. If your concerns are mild or you don’t feel ready for a surgical procedure, Symmetry Med Spa by Bengtson Center offers non-surgical options that can provide meaningful improvement.

Dermal Fillers

Injectable fillers like Juvéderm®, Restylane®, and Sculptra® can contour the jawline and restore lost volume in the cheeks and temples. Our experienced master injectors can create a subtle lifting effect by strategically placing filler to support sagging tissues. Results are immediate but temporary, typically lasting six months to two years depending on the product and area treated.

Neuromodulators

Neuromodulators such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and DAXXIFY™ relax the muscles that create dynamic wrinkles. They are primarily used to soften forehead lines, frown lines, and crow's feet. They can also provide subtle neck improvement when used to relax platysmal bands. Results last three to six months.

Laser and Energy Treatments

Sciton’s suite of laser and light treatments offer versatile options for skin rejuvenation. Treatments like HALO, MOXI and BBL HEROic can improve skin texture, tone, pigmentation and clarity, while SkinTyte lifts and tightens sagging skin.

When Is a Facelift a Better Option Than Non-surgical Treatments?

Non-surgical treatments work best for prevention and early intervention. They can delay the need for surgery. We also have many patients who use them to help maintain their facelift results after surgery.

Like any procedure or treatment, they have limitations:

Injectable fillers add volume but don't lift. Eventually, adding more filler to compensate for sagging can create an overfilled, unnatural appearance (what some people call "filler fatigue").

No non-surgical treatment can remove excess skin, reposition descended fat pads, or tighten the deeper tissues of the face.

Ultimately, the best treatment is the one that matches your goals and where you are in your aging process. Many of our patients begin with non-surgical options, then choose a facelift when those treatments no longer deliver the results they want. Others come to us ready for surgery from the start.

FAQs

What age is best for a facelift?

There isn’t one. The right time depends on how your face has aged rather than your birthday. Most patients pursue facelift surgery in their late 40s to 60s, but some patients in their early 40s are candidates while others in their 70s achieve excellent results. The right time is when the signs of aging that bother you no longer respond to non-surgical treatments.

Am I too young or too old for a facelift?

You're not too young if you have aesthetic concerns that non-surgical treatments can't address. Some people simply age earlier. You're rarely too old as long as you can safely and effectively undergo surgery. The key factors are your overall health, skin quality and realistic expectations.

How do I know if I need a facelift vs. injectables?

Injectable fillers and BOTOX® work well for volume loss and dynamic wrinkles but cannot lift sagging tissue or remove excess skin. If those are your concerns, or you're scheduling injectable appointments more frequently with less satisfaction, a facelift may be the right choice. Many patients benefit from combining injectables with surgical facial rejuvenation.

What's the difference between a full facelift and a mini facelift?

A full facelift addresses the mid-face, lower face, and neck through incisions extending around the ear and into the hairline, with approximately two weeks of recovery. A mini facelift uses smaller incisions to target early jowling and mild sagging, with shorter recovery, but it cannot address significant neck concerns or achieve the same degree of lifting.

What's the difference between a facelift and a neck lift?

A facelift primarily addresses the lower two-thirds face, though it typically includes some neck improvement as well. A neck lift specifically targets loose neck skin, platysma muscle banding, and submental fullness (double chin). It involves incisions under the chin and behind the ears. Many patients need both, and the procedures are frequently combined.

What's the difference between a facelift and a brow lift?

Visit our Testimonials page to read real stories from patients who’ve chosen The Bengtson Center for Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery and Symmetry Med Spa for their aesthetic care.

Where can I see before-and-after photos of your patients’ results?

These procedures address different areas. A facelift improves the mid-face, lower face, and neck. A brow lift (also called a forehead lift) addresses the upper face, including sagging eyebrows and horizontal forehead lines. If your primary concern is heavy, drooping brows that make you look tired or angry, a brow lift may be more appropriate than a facelift. Combining a facelift with a brow lift and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can provide comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

Can I combine a facelift with other procedures?

Yes, and many patients do. Common combinations include:

  • Facelift + neck lift for comprehensive lower face and neck rejuvenation
  • Facelift + blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) to address sagging eyelids and under-eye bags
  • Facelift + brow lift for patients with upper face aging as well
  • Facelift + fat transfer to restore volume in hollow areas while lifting sagging tissues
  • Facelift + laser skin resurfacing to improve skin texture and tone

How long is facelift recovery?

Individual recovery varies. Some patients heal faster, others take longer. But on average, full facelift recovery follows this timeline:

  • Days 1-3: Swelling and bruising are at their peak. You'll rest at home with your head elevated, taking prescribed medications for comfort. During this window, you'll come in for an early follow-up with your surgeon. We will check your healing, change your dressings, and even wash your hair for you, a small touch our patients consistently appreciate.
  • Days 4-7: Swelling and bruising begin to subside, and many patients feel noticeably better. You'll have a follow-up appointment to check your healing and remove sutures or drains.
  • Week 2: Patients start to feel ready to be seen in public with makeup to hide any residual bruising. Many return to desk jobs around this time.
  • Weeks 3-4: Residual swelling continues to decrease. You can gradually resume more activities, though strenuous exercise should still be avoided.
  • Weeks 6-8: Most activity restrictions are lifted. You can return to exercise of all kinds.
  • Months 2-6: Final results emerge as the last swelling resolves and tissues settle into their new position.

Will I have bruising after a facelift?

Yes, bruising is a normal part of facelift recovery. Most patients experience bruising around the cheeks, jawline, and neck that peaks around days 2-3 and gradually fades over the following 10-14 days. By week two, most bruising is manageable with makeup. If you have a special event or important obligation, plan your surgery with adequate recovery time.

When can I return to work after a facelift?

Most patients return to desk work within 10-14 days, once the most significant swelling and bruising have subsided. If your job involves physical activity, heavy lifting or bending, you may need three or more weeks before returning.

Will my facelift scars be visible?

Facelift incisions are placed to be as discreet as possible (within the hairline, in front of or inside the ear, around the earlobe, behind the ear, under the chin). Our surgeons are known for their scar minimization techniques.

Initially, scars are pink or red and may be raised. Over the following months, they fade and flatten significantly. Even hairstylists often don't notice them once they reach maturity.

How long does a facelift last?

Facelift results typically last 7-10 years, though this varies based on genetics, lifestyle, skincare habits, and complementary aesthetic treatments. You'll continue to age after surgery, but you'll always look better than if you'd never had the procedure. We like to describe it as resetting the clock rather than stopping it.

Some patients choose a secondary "refresher" procedure years later to renew their appearance. Others are satisfied with their results for decades with good maintenance.

Will I look natural after a facelift?

A facelift should make you look more rested and youthful, but still clearly yourself.

At the Bengtson Center, natural results are our priority. As Dr. Bengtson says, "The best plastic surgery is in the patients you can't tell have had it." Modern facelift techniques focus on lifting and repositioning deeper tissues rather than simply pulling skin tight, which avoids the overly tight "windswept" appearance that sometimes resulted from older techniques. We invite you to look at before-and-after photos of actual patients so you can see the natural-looking results we achieve.

How much does a facelift cost in Michigan?

Facelift costs vary based on the extent of the procedure, whether additional procedures are combined, provider experience, anesthesia fees and facility fees. At the Bengtson Center, you'll receive a detailed quote during your consultation. We believe in transparent pricing with no surprise costs.

Facelift surgery is considered elective and cosmetic, so it's not covered by insurance. We offer financing options to help make your procedure more accessible.
