Michigan Moms! Get Your Pre-Baby Body Back

Having a baby is one of life's most miraculous journeys, but it's also one that can radically change your body in ways you don't like. Your skin can stretch, fat can accumulate, and your breasts can change size and shape during pregnancy—and not everything goes back to the way it was after the baby arrives! In other words, that bouncing bundle of joy can lead to unwanted jiggling and sagging on Mom.

You may have heard of a procedure to address a post-pregnancy body, but you might not know that a Mommy Makeover at Grand Rapids' Bengtson Center is not one procedure, but many surgeries, treatments, and techniques rolled into one customized plan with the pre-baby you in mind.

As board-certified plastic surgeons with a particular focus on the female form, Dr. Bengtson, Dr. Alfonso and Dr. Horriat are familiar with each element of a Mommy Makeover to help you tighten up what's now too loose, lift what's sagging, and reduce what’s bulging. No two women have the same body, of course, but this is especially true after pregnancy and nursing, so no two Mommy Makeovers will be the same. The point is that you can take back control of your own body and return to the shape (and clothes) you remember from the days before the baby with a Mommy Makeover.

What Goes Into a Mommy Makeover?

When talking about the changes that happen to a body during and after pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing, women typically focus on two areas: the belly and the breasts.

These are the main regions targeted for a Mommy Makeover—and for good reason! The toll that pregnancy takes on a body is most evident where anyone and everyone can see it: right there in front, where it's hard to miss parts that stick out or droop down. Here are the main stars of the Mommy Makeover:

Mommy Makeoverthe Breast

As milk ducts kick into gear throughout the pregnancy, breasts will swell and change, with more changes to come if the baby nurses for any length of time. The most common breast-related surgeries in a Mommy Makeover are breast lifts to address sagging and breast reduction to bring their size back down to manageable levels.

In some cases, women can lose up to a full bra cup size off their original breasts in their post-pregnancy and post-nursing days. Some women may also find that after pregnancy and/or nursing, their breasts are now different sizes or shapes. A breast augmentation can balance the two, keeping them in proportion with each other, and can restore lost volume.

During a Mommy Makeover, Dr. Bengtson, Dr. Alfonso, or Dr. Horriat may recommend breast implants for volume and shape. Our practice offers a range of implant options, including Motiva® implants, a newer generation of silicone implants known for their natural feel and advanced safety features.

Dr. Bengtson is particularly sought out as a plastic surgeon not just for Mommy Makeovers, but for his overall work on breasts, due to his experience, reputation, and talent. He served as the lead investigator for the successful U.S. FDA trials for the Natrelle Style 410 Highly Cohesive Gel Implants, approved in 2013, and was the first plastic surgeon in the Midwest to use the round Natrelle INSPIRA Cohesive implants. Whether working on a complex Mommy Makeover or providing breast augmentation alone, he's committed to providing the best results possible.

Weight gain is common in pregnancy, but not all of that accumulated fat leaves after the baby does — even if you try diet and exercise. Is there anything more frustrating than nibbling away at a restrictive menu and pouring sweat out in a spin class each week, only to see nothing change?

Liposuction is a standard method of surgical fat removal, ensuring that the unwanted fat cells don't just shrink and wait for a new opportunity to grow large again, but that they leave the body and never return. Many of our Michigan Mommy Makeover patients include liposuction in their procedure.

Pregnancy is about more than weight gain, though. A growing baby needs room to move and expand, which is why a pregnant woman's abdomen swells with each passing day of her pregnancy. Unfortunately, not every woman's skin and abdominal tissues are pliant enough to stretch along with the baby, then tighten back into place on their own.

Another Mommy Makeover component, a tummy tuck, removes lax skin that hangs down like an apron, and can also include some fat removal, too. Internally, a tummy tuck (also known as an abdominoplasty) may involve the surgical tightening of abdominal muscles that have spread apart, making it an important part of the Mommy Makeover.

Dr. David Alfonso has advanced expertise in surgical body contouring and offers the drainless tummy tuck technique for appropriate candidates. With this approach, there are no drains to manage at home after the surgery. Many women appreciate the added simplicity and comfort during recovery.

The Skin

The surgical elements of a Mommy Makeover are ideal for changing body contours, but do not address cosmetic changes to the skin. Microneedling can stimulate the skin’s own healing ability to reduce the appearance of telltale marks such as melasma.

Melasma, a skin condition known as "the mask of pregnancy," is common for many women. Dark patches can appear on your forehead and cheeks during gestation, and can remain for long after the baby arrives. If spots fail to fade on their own, women can choose chemical peels and other options to even out their pigmentation again. The Fat

Pretty much any woman who's had a baby will tell you that the belly and the boobs aren't the only parts that get bigger. Stubborn pockets of fat can hold on like a stubborn toddler, refusing to let go of your thighs, butt, and sides.

Another common place to find an unwanted bulge is at the neck, creating the dreaded double chin. These areas can all be reduced with surgical solutions such as body contouring and liposuction — part of many Mommy Makeovers — but there are also nonsurgical options available for women who want to custom tailor their fat removal options while avoiding incisions.

CoolSculpting cools down fat cells — and only fat cells — to a destructive temperature, killing them off and sending them packing out of the body. Coupled with the fat-disrupting Z Wave technology, which maximizes the results, this treatment offers gradual results with no down time or recuperation to speak of. If a double chin is your main focus, consider Kybella, an injectable approved for use in the submental area, where it destroys the fat cells it encounters, causing the area to slim down.

Vaginal Rejuvenation

Lower down on the body, some women may notice that their vaginal area looks and feels different than it did before childbirth, with problems ranging from ill-fitting underwear and swimsuits to discomfort during intercourse.

Physical changes to the area can cause labia to appear more pronounced. This makes some women feel self-conscious about their appearance. For other women, it causes irritation during activities such as cycling or horseback riding. Talk to the Bengtson Center Grand Rapids Mommy Makeover team to learn whether a labiaplasty could help with the problems you are experiencing.

FAQs

There's no cookie cutter formula. Your Mommy Makeover is built around the concerns and goals you have for your body.

Most patients combine a tummy tuck with some form of breast surgery (augmentation, lift, or reduction), plus liposuction to refine stubborn areas. Some women also include vaginal rejuvenation to improve the way their intimate area looks, feels, or functions.

Ultimately, there are no rules, as long as the combination you’re considering is safe for you.

Our surgeons recommend waiting at least six months after giving birth and three to six months after you've finished breastfeeding. Your body needs time to recover from the rigors of childbearing, and your weight should settle into a healthy place you’re able to maintain. Rushing doesn't serve you well.

Yes, you can. A Mommy Makeover won't affect your ability to conceive or carry a pregnancy.

However, pregnancy is likely to undo some, or even most, of what your Mommy Makeover accomplished. We typically recommend waiting until you're fairly certain your family is complete before having surgery.

We also understand that life happens and plans change. If you do become pregnant afterward, revision surgery is an option down the road.

Don’t be fooled by the name — anyone can have a Mommy Makeover. The name caught on because the procedure combination addresses changes commonly caused by pregnancy, but those same changes can result from weight fluctuations, aging or genetics. If you're bothered by those concerns, a "Mommy Makeover" might be exactly what you need, whether you’re a mother or not.

We generally recommend being within 10-15 pounds of a weight you can realistically maintain. A Mommy Makeover isn't a weight loss procedure, so do not expect the number on the scale to change significantly. If you need assistance attaining a healthy weight before surgery, our medical weight loss and wellness program can help you reach your goals.

It’s also important to stabilize your weight to safeguard your results. If you lose a lot of weight after surgery, you may end up with new loose skin. If you gain significantly, your results can reverse. Perfection isn't required, but reasonable stability is the goal.

Yes, and many of our patients have. Dr. Alfonso, who specializes in body contouring and tummy tuck surgery, has extensive experience working with patients who've had cesarean deliveries. Scar tissue from previous surgeries does require thoughtful surgical technique, but it's not a barrier.

Recovery time depends on which procedures you combine. In general, the first week is the hardest. You'll be the most sore, swollen and tired. By week two, most patients are moving around more comfortably.

Expect two to three weeks before you start feeling like your normal self, and six weeks before you're cleared for exercise and heavy lifting.

The general guideline after a Mommy Makeover is nothing over 10 pounds for the first two weeks, and nothing over 20 pounds for six weeks. If you have young children who need or want to be carried, you'll need a plan. Most patients arrange for help from a partner, family member or hired caregiver during early recovery.

Lifting too soon can compromise your results or cause complications. We know it's hard. It's also worth it.

It depends on your job. Desk workers often return after two weeks, sometimes sooner if they can work from home and take breaks. Jobs that require standing, walking or physical labor typically need four to six weeks.

Our team will give you a return-to-work timeline based on what your job actually demands. We're happy to provide documentation if your employer needs it.

We encourage light walking on day one to reduce blood clot risk. Anything more strenuous waits. Most patients can return to light cardio (elliptical, stationary bike) around four weeks, with full clearance for core work, running and weight training at six weeks.

Everyone's pain tolerance differs, but typically, the first few days are the most uncomfortable. Medication helps, and our surgeons use techniques specifically designed to minimize discomfort, including TAP Blocks for abdominoplasty. By five to seven days, most patients are off prescription medication and managing fine with over-the-counter options.

Yes, and we strongly recommend arranging it before surgery. For the first week especially, you'll need someone to help with childcare, pet care, meal prep and household tasks. Bending, lifting and reaching will be limited.

Most patients are more independent by week two, but having backup through week three is wise, particularly if you have young children.

Pricing varies based on which procedures you combine. Because every Mommy Makeover is customized, we provide detailed quotes after your consultation rather than publishing one-size-fits-all pricing.

Our fees include surgeon costs, anesthesia with a board-certified anesthesiologist, facility fees at our AAASF-accredited surgical center, and follow-up care. We offer financing through PatientFi to make payment manageable.

When performed by board-certified plastic surgeons in an accredited facility, yes. Combining procedures actually means one anesthesia session and one recovery period rather than multiple, which many patients find preferable. Dr. Bengtson, Dr. Alfonso and Dr. Horriat are meticulous about case planning to ensure your procedure combination is safe for you.

Any surgery involving incisions leaves scars. Tummy tuck scars run low across the abdomen. Breast scars are primarily in the fold under the breast or around the areola (depending on what type of breast surgery you choose). Scars fade significantly over 12-18 months, and they are in locations that are easy to conceal with most underwear and swimwear.

Ideal candidates are in good overall health, non-smokers, at a stable weight close to their goal, and finished having children. Beyond the physical, you should have realistic expectations of what outcomes are achievable. During your consultation, Dr. Bengtson, Dr. Alfonso or Dr. Horriat will use VECTRA 3D imaging to help you visualize your possible results. You’ll decide together what procedures you’d like to include in your Mommy Makeover.
