Does it seem like no matter how much you exercise or how well you eat, you can't achieve a flat, tight abdomen? Grand Rapids plastic surgeons Dr. Alfonso, Dr. Bengtson and Dr. Horriat can help you improve the appearance of your belly with an abdominoplasty, also known as a "tummy tuck," in Grand Rapids at the Bengtson Center for Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery.
Varying combinations of extra skin, extra fat, and weakened fascia (the thin, strong tissue that encloses your muscles) may combine to create an unsightly, bulging, unflattering stomach. Pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and other factors beyond your control can contribute to a tummy that protrudes or hangs over your waistline.
Sometimes even the healthiest diet and exercise program cannot reduce certain fatty deposits in your abdomen or hip region. This is because stretched-out skin doesn’t respond to these efforts, some fat is considered stubborn and difficult to remove, and lax fascia need help returning to a tighter, more supportive position.
If you are unhappy with the overall way your abdomen looks, know that Dr. Alfonso, Dr. Bengtson and Dr. Horriat customize their tummy tuck techniques to help patients safely achieve a flat, toned tummy with a defined waistline.
When you are ready to make a transformation, you deserve partners on your journey who you trust deeply to deliver the results you want.

As noted above, the technical name for tummy tuck surgery is abdominoplasty, which literally means to reshape the abdomen.
At the Bengtson Center in Grand Rapids, tummy tuck surgery typically involves Dr. Alfonso, Dr. Bengtson or Dr. Horriat removing excess abdominal skin and fat, while tightening loose fascia and tissue that has stretched with weight fluctuation, pregnancy, or weight loss. Tummy tuck surgery gives patients from Grand Rapids and beyond a flatter, more toned abdomen.* A tummy tuck in Michigan may include:
To get a better idea of what a tummy tuck can do, check out before and after photos of patients who chose the surgery. While no one person’s results can be duplicated, the visuals can reveal the possibilities to anyone considering an abdominoplasty.
1. A tummy tuck is not a single surgical procedure, but a combination of methods that can be customized to the patient.
2. Common elements of a tummy tuck include removing excess and sagging skin, eliminating unwanted fat cells, and tightening lax abdominal tissues.
3. Incisions can be made in or below the bikini line, hiding signs of the surgery where they won't be seen — even if you decide to dress for the beach!
4. The tummy tuck surgery may involve only tissues below the navel, or it could include a larger portion of the abdomen. Dr. Bengtson and Dr. Alfonso always work to ensure the belly button looks natural and is in its proper place.
5. Tummy tuck is a common choice for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight or had a baby and found that their skin did not tighten itself to sit firmly against the new, slimmer body contours.
6. Dr. Bengtson works to stay current on the latest medical advances and techniques. His decades of experience have made him a trusted name for plastic surgery, including abdominoplasty, throughout Grand Rapids and beyond. He is routinely voted "Best Plastic Surgeon" by readers of Grand Rapids Magazine and annually finds himself on lists of top doctors in the country, thanks to votes from his patients and peers.
During your private consultation for a tummy tuck Grand Rapids plastic surgeon, Dr. Alfonso, Dr. Bengtson or Dr. Horriat will assess your body, ask questions to establish the desired ultimate end results, and plan the procedure accordingly.
Still, there are more details to consider, so you come into a surgery armed with the knowledge necessary for making the best decision for you.
Surgical drains are small tubes that remove fluid buildup from inside the body during early healing after a procedure. They are essential for some tummy tucks, but not all.
In many cases, Dr. Alfonso uses a drainless tummy tuck technique for his patients. This advanced option uses special suturing techniques to close the internal space where fluid would normally collect, eliminating the need for external drains.
The drainless technique has several key advantages. Without drains to manage, the recovery process is easier and more comfortable. Patients are spared from having to monitor and empty the drains, which can be both physically and mentally taxing, and can often regain mobility faster. There is also a lower risk of infection.
No single technique is right for all patients. Our highly experienced surgeons will recommend the technique best suited to your body and the extent of your procedure.
Flattening the tummy area with a tummy tuck may inspire you to make cosmetic changes elsewhere on the body! The Bengtson Center understands that every patient has unique goals—and that overall body balance and proportion is important for maintaining a natural, slim, and healthy look.
That’s why some of our Grand Rapids tummy tuck patients also seek additional procedures and treatments. Women who have lost weight sometimes find that a breast lift is necessary to give their chest a perkier, fuller look, as opposed to a sagging one. Men in a similar position may opt for surgery to remove loose skin, liposuction to get rid of excess fat on the chest, or even male breast reduction surgery to address gynecomastia.
An element of many tummy tuck procedures, liposuction can also be performed as a standalone procedure on the abdomen, as well as on many other parts of the body where fat accumulates. Patients who want to reduce their fat while avoiding surgery can choose CoolSculpting, which cools targeted fat cells to disrupt them. The Bengtson Center offers this nonsurgical technique handled by experienced aesthetic specialists trained to maximize results.
Weight loss and exercise alone can’t always reshape curves or reduce unwanted fat and skin. If you have tried these strategies and still have a bulging stomach, a tummy tuck may help you reshape and tone this prominent area. Tummy tuck surgery in Michigan can be ideal for our Grand Rapids, Detroit, and Birmingham patients who have done the workouts and lost the weight, but still cannot achieve or restore the body contours they desire.
Every day, women and men of various ages and from a variety of circumstances choose to undergo tummy tuck surgery in Michigan.
Many of them have been working hard to transform their bodies, but just aren't seeing the results they want. Some are moms who enjoy their adorable babies, but not the way their abdominal muscles haven’t retracted since giving birth. Some are committed fitness enthusiasts who have literally worked their butts off, but still deal with a stubborn gut. It can be frustrating to feel like one particular part of your body won't be tamed!
Beyond this, a range of factors generally defines good candidates for this procedure.

At the Bengtson Center, we use a multimodal pain management protocol that includes TAP blocks and Exparel®. This dramatically reduces the discomfort you feel from the moment you wake up from your surgery. It also significantly decreases the need for narcotic pain medication. Many patients tell us the first few days after their tummy tuck were far more manageable than they expected.
A TAP block (transversus abdominis plane block) is an injection that delivers local anesthetic into the skin above your uppermost abdominal muscles. Our surgeons administer a TAP block at the end of your tummy tuck procedure. It takes about 20 minutes to reach its full analgesic effect, so by the time you wake up in the recovery suite, you'll already be benefiting from the pain relief. Your TAP block can provide up to 24 hours of continuous pain reduction.
Abdominoplasty is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss surgery. Although it's possible to lose a few pounds from the removal of excess skin and fat, the primary goal is reshaping your abdomen. Most patients find that their silhouette looks significantly different even if the scale doesn't change much. We recommend reaching a weight you're happy with before surgery so your results reflect your healthiest self.
If you've lost weight with GLP-1 medications, you might be left with a side effect you didn't expect: loose, hanging skin that won't budge no matter how much you diet or exercise. This is a normal outcome of significant weight loss, no matter what method you use to lose the weight. A tummy tuck is a wonderful way to put the finishing touches on your transformation after weight loss.
We recommend waiting to have a tummy tuck until your weight has been stable for at least three to six months. The waiting period gives your body time to adjust to its new size and ensures you're prepared to maintain your results. If you're still actively losing weight, your skin and tissues will continue changing, which can affect your outcome.
Here are a few key milestones in the typical tummy tuck recovery timeline:
Our surgeons encourage walking from day one. Light movement promotes circulation and supports the healing process. Within two to three weeks, you may be able to resume light lower body exercises, depending on your progress. You must wait four to six weeks before resuming core exercises, heavy lifting and high-impact activities. Your surgeon will provide personalized guidance at your postoperative appointments and clear you for specific activities as your body heals.
A tummy tuck does leave a scar, but our surgeons place the incision very low, along the bikini line, where it is concealed by most underwear and swimwear. The scar's length depends on how much skin is removed. It will reach its final appearance in 12 to 18 months. For most patients, the trade-off is well worth it: a flat, toned abdomen they feel great about, with a scar almost nobody sees.
Yes. A tummy tuck does not interfere with your ability to get pregnant, and it does not make pregnancy unsafe. However, pregnancy will stretch your abdominal muscles and skin that were tightened during the surgery, which may affect your results. For this reason, we usually recommend waiting until you're done having children before having a tummy tuck.
A mini tummy tuck addresses concerns in the area below your belly button. It's ideal for patients with a small amount of loose skin and no muscle separation. The incision is shorter, the procedure is less extensive and the recovery is quicker.
A full tummy tuck addresses both the upper and lower abdomen. It removes more excess skin and gives the surgeon the option to repair separated abdominal muscles. It requires a longer incision and more recovery time, but in exchange it provides more dramatic results.
An extended tummy tuck goes beyond the abdomen to address excess skin in the flanks and lower back. It's a popular option for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and have a lot of loose skin left behind. Although the incision is longer, it is still placed so that it is hidden by most clothing, and the entire midsection (front, sides and back) can be contoured. Patients interested in an extended tummy tuck will work with Dr. Alfonso, who specializes in this technique.
Repairing diastasis recti (separated abdominal muscles) is one of the core components of a full tummy tuck. Diastasis recti occurs when the vertical abdominal muscles pull apart, often due to pregnancy. This creates a bulge or "pooch" that does not improve with exercise and leaves your core unstable. Many patients noticed improved horse strength and posture after this repair, in addition to the cosmetic improvement.
Drains are a routine part of most tummy tuck procedures performed throughout the world. They serve an important purpose, but they are not necessary in all cases.
Dr. Alfonso has made the drainless technique his standard of care. He uses it for most of his abdominoplasty procedures, as well as many circumferential body lift procedures.
Internal suturing can be more difficult in patients with substantial scar tissue from prior abdominal procedures. In those situations, a conventional drain-assisted recovery may still be necessary.
Tummy tuck pricing varies based on the type of procedure (mini, full or extended), whether liposuction is included, anesthesia fees and other factors.

Liposuction removes excess fat but doesn't address loose skin or separated muscles. A tummy tuck removes both excess skin and fat while also tightening the abdominal wall. Many patients choose to combine them: liposuction to contour the waist and flanks, and a tummy tuck to flatten and tighten the abdomen.
Experience matters. The Bengtson Center performs approximately 200 tummy tucks each year and has completed more than 1,000 since January 2020.
Dr. Alfonso is our abdominoplasty specialist. He has developed a reputation for his exceptional body contouring results, and he is currently the only surgeon at BCAPS who offers the drainless and extended tummy tuck techniques.
Dr. Bengtson and Dr. Horriat also perform tummy tucks and bring their own areas of expertise to the procedure. Additionally, Dr. Bengtson the Medical Director of IC Surgical, the company behind Interi®, a system he helped develop to improve postoperative healing and reduce complications like seroma. His research on Interi® was presented at ASAPS 2020 and later published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum. When your surgeon is literally inventing better ways to help patients heal, you're in exceptional hands.
