What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation enhances breast size and shape with surgically placed breast implants with or without simultaneous or delayed autologous fat transfer.

There are plenty of before and after pictures of breast augmentation patients on the internet, allowing patients to get a rough idea of what the procedure accomplishes and what the surgeon can deliver.

But seeing breast augmentation results on someone else and understanding what goes into a comprehensive consultation and personalized surgery for you are two different things. The Bengtson Center team encourages every woman thinking about having breast augmentation to be educated as much as she can about the entire process.

What Types of Breast Implants Can I Choose From?

Breast implants consist of a saline fluid or silicone gel contained within a strong but soft external silicone shell. Implants come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and surface textures, and they can be filled with a variety of materials and degrees of cohesivity, or "stickiness."

To achieve the specific look you want via breast augmentation, our surgeons offer a complete range of breast implants — silicone, silicone gel, gel, cohesive gel, standard gel, or saline — in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Your surgeon will guide you in selecting the best implant for your desired breast shape, size, and projection.

Can Breast Augmentation Be Done With Fat Transfer?

Breast augmentation via fat transfer involves the surgeon using liposuction to remove some of your fat from somewhere on your body you don't like and transferring it to a place you do. The fat is then processed and prepared for transfer to your breasts.

Compared to breast implants, the fat transfer method leads to more modest increases, and is typically used in addition to a breast implant or to cover over areas of breast implants that have wrinkling and rippling. It is difficult with today's technology to add enough volume to the breast to use fat transfer alone without an implant.

Know The Breast AugmentationBasics

1. Breast augmentation adds volume to enhance breast size, provide a new shape, and improve firmness of the breasts

2. Our Grand Rapids breast augmentation patients undergo general anesthesia for their surgery, which is an outpatient procedure that lasts less than an hour and includes an advanced 24-hour Fast Trak recovery program

3. Dr. Bengtson is a nationally recognized expert, researcher, and guest speaker in breast augmentation and developer of breast implant innovations

4. The Bengtson Center continues to be the only West Michigan practice to offer VECTRA 3D imaging and simulation to give patients an amazingly accurate visual preview of the range of their actual outcome

5. Since he's performed more than 4,000 breast implant procedures, you can be confident you are in great hands with Dr. Bengtson or Dr. Alfonso and that your breast augmentation outcome will be natural and proportional

6. Breast implant follow-up is important. Most surgeons recommend replacement or MRIs every 10 years. This is not covered by insurance and can be very expensive. Dr. Bengtson, Dr. Alfonso, and all surgeons at the Bengtson Center offer in-office Ultrasounds which gives them the ability to follow a patient's implants for life.

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation Surgery in Michigan?

Although the average age of a breast augmentation patient is about 35, women from 18 to well into their 60s may elect to have the surgery at the Grand Rapids Bengtson Center.

Common reasons for choosing breast augmentation include:

  • Noticeable asymmetry in breast shape or volume
  • Feeling like your breasts never fully developed
  • Volume loss after pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Volume loss related to aging or weight changes
  • Wanting to refine or correct a previous breast surgery
  • Seeking more balance between the upper and lower body
  • Wanting to feel more confident in clothing, lingerie, or swimwear

Additional Reading

There are many factors that generally define good candidates for breast augmentation procedures.

  • You can clearly define why you would like breast augmentation surgery.
  • You understand what breast enlargement surgery can and cannot accomplish.
  • You accept the risks of breast enhancement surgery and your responsibilities as a patient.
  • You are physically healthy, emotionally secure, and stable.
  • You accept that you will need to make healthy lifestyle choices to maintain your breast augmentation results.
  • You understand breast implants are not for life, that you will require follow-up, and that you will eventually need to have your implants exchanged.
  • You are looking for proportional, natural, and restored breast results.

The Get Up and Go, 24-Hour Fast-Trak Recovery for Breast Augmentation Patients

While breast augmentation has long been used to add volume to women's breasts, the surgery has also long been marked by discomfort or even pain lasting weeks and requiring significant downtime and narcotic pain relievers.

Dr. Bengtson developed the Fast-Trak Recovery Program to keep swelling and bruising to a minimum and allow breast augmentation patients to return to their daily life immediately, giving them more time to enjoy their new look without the traditional limitations or drawbacks, pain, and length of recovery of this surgery in years past. All of our surgeons use this approach to help patients return to their daily activities in 24 to 48 hours after breast augmentation.

After leaving the surgical center, patients may go home and take a nap, then head out for an evening of low-key activity, such as seeing a movie, having dinner, shopping, or a soccer game. Why Should I Choose the Bengtson Center for My Breast Augmentation in Michigan?

Choosing where to have breast augmentation matters as much as deciding to have it. Here is why patients have been choosing the Bengtson Center for over 30 years:

Experience & Reputation

Dr. Bengtson, Dr. Alfonso and Dr. Horriat are among the most experienced providers of breast augmentation in Michigan. All are board-certified plastic surgeons who completed advanced fellowship training in addition to their training in general surgery and plastic surgery.

Industry-Leading Expertise

Our surgeons have performed more than 4,000 breast augmentation procedures, and 25% of our breast surgery practice involves correcting complications from procedures performed elsewhere.

As Dr. Bengtson says: "It's the sophisticated first-time augmentation patient who recognizes: 'If he corrects this many augmentation complications from others, this is who I want doing my breast augmentation the first time.'"

Additional Reading

Low Revision Rate

National revision rates hover between 20-25% in the first three years, meaning roughly one in four women will require a second surgery to correct problems from their first. At the Bengtson Center, our approach is designed to get it right the first time. Dr. Bengtson’s revision rate is only 3%.

Reduced Recovery Time

All of our surgeons employ the 24-hour Fast-Trak Recovery Program developed by Dr. Bengtson. By creating the implant pocket with minimal tissue trauma and encouraging early movement, most patients return to normal daily activities with few restrictions within 24 to 48 hours.

Unmatched Long-Term Care

We are the only practice in Michigan offering complimentary ultrasound monitoring for breast implants, saving patients thousands over expensive MRIs. If an Allergan implant needs to be replaced within the first 10 years after surgery, we can assist you in filing a claim for reimbursement with the manufacturer.

Personalized Planning

Your surgical plan is created with you, not just for you. Our surgeons take the time to understand what you want to look like and how you want to feel in your skin. Then, they customize the procedure to fit your specific goals, lifestyle, breasts, body, and desired outcome.

All-Inclusive Facility

Our QUAD A accredited surgical center meets hospital-level safety standards while providing spa-like comfort. Patients appreciate having everything under one roof — consultations, surgery, postoperative imaging, and additional aesthetic services — in an environment that is beautiful and relaxing.

Can I See My Breast Enhancement Results Before Surgery?

Following cost and safety, your individual outcome is the most important aspect in your breast augmentation decision-making process.

In West Michigan, patients typically do not want their breasts to be too large or too small at the end of the surgery, and stuffing your bra with an implant or looking at another patients' before and after photos may give you some idea of what to roughly expect, but cannot accurately or realistically portray YOUR unique outcome.

During your individualized consultation for breast augmentation Grand Rapids plastic surgeons at the Bengtson Center will help you formulate a surgery plan which includes the selection of the type, shape, and size of your breast implants using West Michigan's first and only VECTRA 3D imaging and simulation system. VECTRA is an extremely accurate computer imaging and simulation system that allows you to visualize your personalized breast augmentation outcome before even undergoing surgery!

This is more than a quick alteration to a photo you bring in. The sophisticated device scans your body and allows the surgeon to create a simulated version of you, which can be modified to show the results of various implant sizes and styles in real time. FAQs

What’s the Difference Between Saline and Silicone Breast Implants?

Don't worry about making a premature decision now on the specific breast implants you would like to receive. There are so many misconceptions about breast implants that Dr. Bengtson, Dr. Alfonso, or Dr. Horriat will clarify them with you.

During your consultation for a breast augmentation Grand Rapids plastic surgeons at the Bengtson Center will walk you through your options and explain the benefits of each one for your specific situation. Your body type, current breast size and shape, desired increase, current firmness of your breast, and other factors will all play a part in determining the implant options for you.

For now, it's a good idea to learn some breast implant basics, which essentially boil down to saline and various cohesivities or firmness of silicone fillers.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline is the technical term for salt water, a sterile, safe fluid that has long been used in breast implants, either round or teardrop-shaped, that are inserted empty into the body and then filled to the appropriate volume to achieve breast augmentation.

The water-filled silicone shells are often noted as feeling firmer to the touch than the alternative and may create more visible wrinkling and rippling. Ruptures are possible — the chance is about 1 percent per implant per year — and would lead to a gradual deflation as the harmless saline fluid is absorbed by the body. This is really the only advantage of a saline implant, aside from cost.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone is a thicker substance, closer in consistency to human fat than saline. Silicone devices come in both round and anatomical/teardrop shapes, which are filled before insertion.

In the case of a fold-flaw or shell tear, the extremely thick gel remains in the implant shell and the amount that may extrude out of the shell remains inside the capsule or "internal zip-lock bag" that forms around the implant. On our breast implant page, you can see videos of Dr. Bengtson cutting implant shells so you can visualize how thick the silicone gel is.

What Does Breast Implant Profile Mean?

Profile refers to how far your implants project forward from your chest wall. The options range from low to ultra-high, with moderate and high profiles in between. A lower profile creates a subtler enhancement, while higher profiles offer more forward projection. Your surgeon will assess your natural breast dimensions and recommend a profile range that can achieve proportional results for your frame.

What's the Difference Between Smooth and Textured Breast Implants?

Smooth implants have a soft outer shell that can move within the breast pocket. Textured implants have a slightly rough outer surface designed to help them stay in position. The textured surface is most common with teardrop implants to prevent rotation that would distort the shape of the breasts.

Should I Choose Round or Teardrop Breast Implants?

Round implants provide even fullness throughout the breast, particularly in the upper pole, which creates cleavage. They can look natural in most body types.

Teardrop implants mimic the natural breast slope with more volume at the bottom and less in the upper pole. Dr. Bengtson was a lead FDA investigator for shaped "gummy bear" implants and has some of the most extensive experience in North America with these devices.

The right choice depends on your existing breast shape, tissue characteristics, and preferences. We’ll use VECTRA® 3D imaging to help you decide.

Where Are the Incisions Made for Breast Augmentation?

Most patients choose the inframammary approach, which places the incision in the natural crease beneath the breast. This provides excellent access for implant placement and typically heals with minimal visibility. Additional options include the periareolar incision (around the nipple border) or transaxillary incision (in the underarm).

What Are My Placement Options for Breast Implants?

Implants can be placed in the subglandular (above the chest muscle, beneath breast tissue) position or submuscular (partially beneath the pectoral muscle) position. Submuscular placement is the most popular choice because it provides additional tissue coverage that may lead to a more natural look and feel. Your optimal placement depends on your breast tissue thickness, lifestyle, and implant choice.

Do I Need a Breast Augmentation or a Breast Lift?

Breast augmentation adds volume, while a breast lift (mastopexy) addresses sagging by tightening and repositioning the breast tissue. If your nipples sit at or below your breast crease, or you've lost firmness after pregnancy or weight loss, you may benefit from a lift. A lift is often combined with implants for both shape and fullness.

How Painful Is Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia, so you’ll be fully asleep and comfortable during the procedure. After surgery, most patients describe the sensation as tightness or pressure rather than sharp pain. It is usually manageable with the medication we prescribe.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From Breast Augmentation?

With our Fast-Trak Recovery program, most patients return to daily activities in 24 to 48 hours with minimal restrictions. You'll need a capable adult with you for the first 24 hours after surgery. Light activity resumes quickly, followed by full exercise in approximately four weeks. Our concierge program assists out-of-town guests with accommodations at one of the premier hotels nearby, including the JW Marriott or Hampton Inn.

When Can I Exercise After Breast Augmentation?

You can return to the gym within days of surgery, but with limitations. Light lower-body exercises and walking are typically fine almost immediately. However, you'll need to avoid bouncing movements and chest-focused exercises for about four weeks. High-impact activities such as running can generally resume around the four-week mark.

Will I Have Visible Scars After Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation incisions are commonly placed in the inframammary fold (the natural crease beneath your breast), where they're concealed by most clothing and swimwear. Scars typically fade significantly over 12 to 18 months. We'll provide incision care instructions to optimize the healing process.

What Are the Risks of Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Like all surgical procedures, breast augmentation carries the potential for risks, including infection, bleeding, changes in nipple sensation, capsular contracture (scar tissue around the implant), and implant-related complications. These will be discussed in detail during your consult.

When Will I See My Breast Augmentation Results?

You'll notice an immediate change in the size and shape of your breasts. The size may look exaggerated at first due to swelling. As the swelling subsides and the implants settle into their final position (a process sometimes called "dropping and fluffing”), your results will refine. Expect to see your final results between three and six months post-surgery.

What Cup Size Will I Be After Breast Augmentation?

Cup size is not the best way to think about your breast augmentation. Because cup sizes vary significantly between bra manufacturers, we focus on achieving proportional results for your body rather than targeting a specific letter.

How Long Do Breast Augmentation Results Last?

Breast augmentation results are long-lasting, but your breasts are not expected to look the same forever. Weight loss, weight gain, or pregnancy may change your results, and normal aging and gravity may affect your results over time.

How Are Breast Implants Monitored After Surgery?

Dr. Bengtson has won national research awards in plastic surgery using high resolution ultrasound for the detection of breast implant shell failure and has found it superior to MRI for that task.

MRI sessions cost $3,500, with insurance companies not paying for this test for breast implant follow-up. The FDA has recommended MRI check-ups at three to five and seven years following breast augmentation; this schedule would cost more than the actual procedure for most patients.

We wrap the ultrasound follow-up into the surgical fees, and this gives patients great reassurance. Shell failure — if it happens — usually does not occur until seven or eight years following surgery, so we begin imaging patients at that time or when there are any noticeable changes or trauma to their breasts. See our high resolution ultrasound webpage and our published articles for additional information.

How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost In Michigan?

Breast augmentation pricing varies based on the details of each patient’s surgical plan. At the Bengtson Center, your quote includes surgeon fees, anesthesia, facility costs, implants, and our lifetime ultrasound follow-up program (a value that can save thousands compared to requiring costly MRIs). We offer financing options to make your investment manageable.

Will Weight Gain Or Loss Affect My Breast Augmentation Results?

Weight changes will not affect the breast implants themselves, but they can change the way your breasts look. Weight gain may increase your breast volume further and change your overall proportions. Weight loss can reduce your natural breast tissue and might affect how natural your implants look and feel.

What Happens If a Breast Implant Ruptures?

Modern implants are quite durable, but rupture is a possibility. Saline implants deflate noticeably if the shell fails, and the body safely absorbs the saltwater. Silicone gel implants may experience "silent rupture," where the cohesive gel stays contained but the shell is compromised. We monitor your implants with our complimentary lifetime ultrasound follow-up program to detect any changes early and plan revision surgery if necessary.

Can I Breastfeed After Getting Breast Implants?

Most women can breastfeed successfully after breast augmentation. Incisions in the breast crease (inframammary incision) and submuscular implant placement generally preserve milk ducts and nerves better than other approaches. If breastfeeding is important to you, share this with your surgeon during consultation.

How Often Do Breast Implants Need To Be Replaced?

Breast implants don't have an expiration date, and the old "replace them every 10 years" rule is outdated. If you're happy with your results and have no complications, your implants can stay in place. That said, implants aren't lifetime devices. Every patient should be prepared for the possibility that they may eventually need implant replacement or implant removal.

What Procedures Can Be Combined With Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation pairs beautifully with many of our other procedures, including breast lift, liposuction, tummy tuck, and Brazilian butt lift. Many women combine multiple procedures into a custom mommy makeover to restore their body after pregnancy.
