BOTOX® Cosmetic is the household name for neurotoxins. It was the first wrinkle-relaxing injectable to enter the market when it received FDA approval in 2002, and it is still one of the most widely used.
In the decades since its debut, BOTOX® has been joined by Dysport® and DAXXIFY®. Collectively, neurotoxins are the single most popular nonsurgical cosmetic treatment in the United States, helping million patients smooth fine lines in 2024.
Now that so many different options are available, we're finding that fewer patients are coming in with basic questions about what neurotoxins are or how they work. Instead, our patients now want to know how they can get the most from their investment. How long should the effects realistically last? Is there a product that outperforms the rest? And is there anything you can do to extend your results?
At Symmetry Med Spa by Bengtson Center, we've performed thousands of neurotoxin treatments with all different products in our thirty-year history. Here's what we tell patients.
Six neurotoxin products are currently FDA-approved for cosmetic use in the United States. At Symmetry Med Spa, we offer:
All of these products, as you can see from their medical names, are variations of botulinum toxin type A. They contain the same active ingredient, but the way they are manufactured and formulated is different. This gives them different properties.
The vast majority of neurotoxins currently available in the US have similar longevity. The noticeable onset of effects occurs within a few days, and the results of the treatment last three to four months on average.
There is one notable exception.
Currently, the longest-lasting neurotoxin is DAXXIFY®. DAXXIFY® received FDA approval in 2022, 20 years after BOTOX® Cosmetic, for the treatment of moderate-to-severe frown lines (glabellar lines) with a duration of up to six months. No other cosmetic neurotoxin has achieved that benchmark.
At Symmetry Med Spa by Bengtson Center, we were among the earliest adopters of DAXXIFY® in Michigan and the United States, and we were one of 65 practices in the world to launch the product. Our Master Injectors have deep experience with the full neurotoxin menu and can help determine whether DAXXIFY® is the right fit for you.
What makes DAXXIFY® different is its formulation. BOTOX®, Dysport®, Jeuveau® and Letybo® contain ingredients called accessory proteins alongside the active toxin to help stabilize the product. Xeomin® is often referred to as a "naked" neurotoxin because it lacks accessory proteins.
DAXXIFY® uses a proprietary peptide technology as a stabilizer. This technology helps it bind more effectively to the nerve receptors, so it stays active in the treated area for a longer duration. The results of DAXXIFY® can last up to six months, nearly twice as long as other neurotoxins.
The clinical evidence behind DAXXIFY® is exciting. According to an article published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, pooled data from two studies showed that DAXXIFY® maintained none-to-mild glabellar line severity for a median of 24 weeks (6 months). A third, larger study confirmed the median duration for treated glabellar lines to return to moderate or severe severity was 24 weeks.
There's also encouraging data on immunogenicity (the ability of a substance to trigger an adaptive immune response in the body). Some patients develop a tolerance to a certain neurotoxin after using it for a while. The treatment becomes partially or fully ineffective.
A 2023 study on DAXXIFY® published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal found that none of the 2,737 evaluable patients developed a tolerance to the active ingredient. There was no observed impact on clinical efficacy, safety or duration of action. For patients who receive neurotoxin treatments regularly, that's reassuring news.
Aesthetic professionals speak in averages when we discuss the longevity of neurotoxins. Your results might last longer than the average, or they may fade sooner. Whether your experience falls within the average range or on either side of it, it’s all normal.
There are several factors that can influence how long a neurotoxin remains effective in your body. A faster metabolism breaks down the product more quickly, which is one reason younger, more active patients sometimes notice their results fading sooner. Frequent, intense exercise is a common reason for neurotoxins not lasting as long as expected.
The treatment area also matters. Larger, more active muscle groups (like the frontalis across your forehead) tend to metabolize neurotoxin faster than smaller, less active ones (like the corrugators between your brows).
Dose does play a role, but it's not as simple as "more product = longer results." Overdosing can create an unnatural frozen appearance, while underdosing may leave you feeling like the treatment barely worked. The right dose for you is highly personal, which is why our Master Injectors spend so much time getting to know you and designing your treatment plan.
There is also the injection technique. A 2022 study published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal found that precise DAXXIFY® injection targeting the corrugator muscles in the forehead resulted in longer treatment duration compared to targeting other forehead muscles. In other words, where and how your injector places the product is a real variable in how long it lasts.
You can't control your metabolism. But there are several things within your power that may help extend the life of your results.
The longest-lasting neurotoxin on the market is DAXXIFY®, but the best results come from working with injectors who know how to match the right product, the right dose and the right technique to your face. That's what we do at Symmetry Med Spa.
