Perhaps you've been picturing it all winter: a Michigan lake day where you don't think twice about what you're wearing. A family vacation where purchasing a new swimsuit doesn't come with a side of dread. Or just a regular Tuesday in July, where you catch your reflection and feel like the version of yourself you remember from before kids.

It's not too late to bring those visions to life with a mommy makeover. The Bengtson Center for Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery in Grand Rapids has helped hundreds of mothers through this transformation. Our surgeons — Dr. Bradley Bengtson, Dr. David Alfonso and Dr. Narges Horriat — and their team understand the tension many moms feel between wanting something for themselves and feeling like the logistics of balancing plastic surgery with family life are too complex. With the right planning, both priorities can coexist, and you can enjoy that summer lake day you've been dreaming of.

What Goes Into a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a customized combination of surgeries designed to restore the areas of your body that have been affected by pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding. This includes the breasts and abdomen for most women, though it can include much more.

The most common mommy makeover procedures we perform at the Bengtson Center for Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery include a tummy tuck paired with a breast lift, breast augmentation or breast reduction.

Many women also include liposuction to remove stubborn fat and sculpt their contours. Some patients add labiaplasty or nonsurgical skin treatments to round out their results.

At our practice, your consultation process includes VECTRA® 3D imaging so you can see a simulation of your potential results before deciding which procedures you'd like to include in your mommy makeover. It takes some of the guesswork out of treatment planning.

How Does Your Mommy Makeover Procedure Combination Affect Your Recovery?

The procedures you choose and how many you combine directly affect what your recovery will feel like, how long it will take and how much support you'll need. As a general rule, more procedures mean a longer and more demanding recovery. But it's not purely about quantity. The type of procedures also matters.

Breast Surgery Recovery

Most patients find breast surgery recovery is surprisingly manageable on its own. Many women are starting to move around within days and are comfortably active within a week. There are lifting restrictions for several weeks, but overall, the physical limitations are less disruptive to daily life than abdominal surgery.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

A tummy tuck is typically the most physically demanding component of a mommy makeover, especially if it includes muscle repair. Patients who include a tummy tuck in their mommy makeover should plan for a longer initial recovery period and more help at home than those who are having breast surgery alone.

Liposuction Recovery

Liposuction on its own has a relatively mild recovery, as it is a minimally invasive surgery. When it's added to a tummy tuck or breast surgery, it doesn't dramatically extend your downtime, but it can increase swelling and soreness in the treated areas. The compression garment worn during recovery helps with both.

Combining Procedures

When you combine procedures, your body is healing on multiple fronts simultaneously. The recovery isn't necessarily longer than the most intensive single procedure, but it can be more physically taxing because there's simply more going on. The upside is that you're recovering once instead of twice (or three times). You only need one anesthesia session, one block of time off work and one period of needing help around the house. For most of our mommy makeover patients, that tradeoff is well worth it.

Planning Your Mommy Makeover-to-Summer Timeline

Plastic surgery should be planned ahead, not a last-minute decision. If you have a specific occasion or time of year you'd like to be your "big reveal," note it and work backwards from there.

Let's use mid-July as an example. If you're aiming to feel comfortable in a swimsuit or attend a summer event without physical limitations, here's what the road there might look like.

8-12 Weeks Before Your Summer Goal: Surgery Day

For a mid-July target, your surgery date will be in late April or early May. You will be treated at our QUAD A-accredited on-site surgical center in Grand Rapids. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes four to six hours, depending on which procedures you're combining.

Weeks 1-2 After Surgery: The Rest-and-Recover Phase

In the first week, expect to feel sore, swollen and tired to some degree. Bending and lifting are off the table. You will need someone else to help care for you and assist with household chores and childcare.

That said, you're not bedridden. Short, slow walks around your home are encouraged from day one to promote healthy circulation and reduce blood clot risk. By the end of week one, most patients have transitioned from prescription pain medication to over-the-counter relief.

By week two, you should notice real improvement in how you feel. You'll be able to resume more movement and light tasks.

Weeks 3-4 After Surgery: Gradual Return to Activity

In this phase, you'll start to feel like yourself again. You may be tempted to get back to normal life, but resist the urge. Your body is still recovering and needs you to take it easy.

The lifting restriction is still in place at this point, but you may be driving again and you might be back at a desk job, especially if you can work from home. You have regained much of your independence. Listen to your body as you become more active. If something is painful or doesn't feel right, stop the activity immediately.

You can reach your surgical team whenever a question comes up. No need to guess whether something is normal or wonder if you can restart a specific activity. Just give us a ring and ask.

Weeks 6-8 After Surgery: Summer-Ready

At the six-week point, most patients are cleared for exercise, heavy lifting and full activity. By now, your swelling will have resolved significantly and your scars will be maturing. You can enjoy all the summer fun you want, the difference being that now you'll feel significantly more confident in your body while doing so.

What Makes Mommy Makeover Recovery Different at the Bengtson Center?

At the Bengtson Center for Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery, our surgeons have spent years refining their approach to mommy makeover procedures so our patients enjoy better aesthetic results and a better recovery experience.

Fast-Track Recovery Program

Our Fast-Trak Recovery Program helps breast augmentation patients get back on their feet in 24-48 hours. With this approach, over 90% of patients can return to normal activities (except heavy lifting and strenuous exercise) 24 hours after the procedure. Many do not require narcotic pain medicine after surgery.

Drainless Tummy Tuck

If your plan includes a tummy tuck, Dr. Alfonso offers a drainless technique for appropriate candidates. No drains to manage means a simpler, more comfortable recovery. There's one less thing standing between you and getting back to normal life.

Advanced Pain Management

Our surgeons use TAP Blocks (transversus abdominis plane blocks) and Exparel, a long-acting local anesthetic, to provide sustained pain relief for up to 72 hours after surgery. This covers the window when post-surgical discomfort peaks. Many patients transition to over-the-counter medication sooner.
