The first lines that appear aren’t so bad. You’ve worked hard to succeed, both professionally and personally, and if that hard work comes with a few fine lines, so be it. You might even like the rugged look they give you.
But “a few fine lines” are just the start of the story. Then come the deep creases, the drooping brows, the permanent scowling expression, and the worries that the world may no longer see you the way you see yourself.
Men and women may age differently, but all of us want to feel like we’re aging well. Men now account for roughly one in seven aesthetic procedures performed worldwide. According to a 14-year analysis published in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), male patients represent 14.5% of all cosmetic procedures globally, and neurotoxins like BOTOX® are their number-one nonsurgical treatment.
Women have historically dominated plastic surgery statistics. While that is still true to some degree, more men are discovering the benefits of investing in their appearance.
2024 data gathered by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that 6% of neuromodulator patients were men. The same report also found that 7% of all plastic surgery patients were men, a 1% increase over 2023.
ISAPS reported 7.8 million neurotoxin procedures performed by plastic surgeons worldwide in 2024. Of those, over 1.2 million were performed on men (16%). It was the single most common nonsurgical procedure for both men and women and among all age groups.
We’re seeing the same pattern here at the Bengtson Center for Aesthetics & Plastic Surgery and Symmetry Med Spa. As leaders in male aesthetic treatments, our team has the expertise and experience to help you look good, feel confident, and exude vitality through all stages of your life.
A few years ago, you may have come across the term “Brotox” in a magazine headline. It was catchy. It was also a little dismissive, as if men getting injectable treatments needed a nickname to make the concept palatable.
Aesthetic care is not only for women. It never was. Men have skin, facial muscles, sun damage, stress, Zoom meetings and high-resolution cameras, too.
Here in Michigan, most men aren’t seeking for an ultra-smooth Hollywood look. They come to us saying things like:
Male patients typically desire a more subtly enhanced look than female patients. Although men share the wish to look their best, they do not want their results to look unnatural or excessively “done.”
Our philosophy always favors natural results at Symmetry Med Spa. This includes injecting with gender-specific factors in mind when they’re relevant.
Yes and no.
The product is the same, but the treatment plan is not copy-and-pasted from a female patient. There are key points of differentiation between male and female anatomy, as well as differences in aesthetic trends and preferences.
For example, a lower and straighter brow line can be considered a classically handsome feature. Male patients typically do not want dramatically elevated or curved brows, while female patients often want their brows to be lifted and arched.
We can look to the jawline for another example. Many women prefer an oval or heart-shaped face with a softer jawline curve. Men, in contrast, tend to favor a strong, angular jawline. Women who feel their jaw is too bulky may get masseter BOTOX® to slim their lower face. It’s rare that we would see men request BOTOX® for the same reason (though they may be interested in it to relieve the symptoms of teeth clenching or grinding).
In addition to these aesthetic considerations, men often have stronger facial muscles, thicker skin, and different facial proportions than women. Men may require more units to achieve optimal results, and injection patterns differ to preserve masculine features. Our Master Injectors take all of these factors into account when designing a male BOTOX® treatment plan.
Common treatment areas include:
Because men have stronger facial muscles than women, it is common for them to require more units of BOTOX® to achieve a comparable outcome. However, simply adding more product is not the best strategy in our experience. Strategic distribution is critical.
Increasing the dose too much could create an overly smooth and clearly enhanced appearance that may read as too feminine. It’s better to retain some muscle movement and soften wrinkles, rather than completely erasing them, to maintain a masculine look for male patients.
We built the Bengtson Center with men in mind from the beginning. Our Grand Rapids location features The Men’s Lounge, a handsomely appointed space that feels more like a visit to a private member’s club than a medical spa. We believe a comfortable environment makes for better experiences and better outcomes.
Injectable treatments are administered by our team of master-level injectors under the oversight of three board-certified plastic surgeons: Dr. Bradley Bengtson, Dr. David Alfonso, and Dr. Narges Horriat. We offer Dysport® and DAXXIFY® alongside BOTOX® so you have options when choosing your neurotoxin.
Our practice holds Allergan Top 100 and Black Diamond status, distinctions awarded to the top-performing practices in the country based on volume and expertise. We’ve earned more than 1,000 five-star Google reviews and have been featured in Esquire, The Wall Street journal, Forbes, The New York Times, and Men’s Health.
If you believe your face no longer reflects how youthful and energetic you feel, we invite you to visit Symmetry Med Spa by Bengtson Center to find out whether BOTOX® can give your appearance a boost. Our goal is to help you achieve the refreshed but masculine look you want, in a way that fits your lifestyle and preferences.
